Bug Merchandise From Japan

So, in the last week of February this year, and the first two weeks of March, I had an amazing opportunity to go to Japan. It was my first time going on such a long and distant holiday with just my partner and my friend rather than with family, so it was a rather exciting, and sometimes scary trip.

Some of you might have noticed that almost all of the Bug Merchandise I've featured on my website so far has been from Japan, and to be honest, I'm not really sure why Japan supplies the most varied and well-designed merchandise for bugs, maybe because in Japan, bugs are a staple part of childhood. Beetle fighting is a hobby there, and insects are arguably lot easier to buy (or catch) and keep as pets, even for a child.

It might be interesting to discuss the ethics of beetle fighting sometime, but I don't want to go on a massive tangent. I will say that 99% of the time, I'm against it, but if they are both of the same species, this can be seen as enrichment as the beetles almost never hurt each other in such cases, and it is a behaviour that they have in the wild. But I digress.

I made it my mission to obtain as much bug merchandise as I could, and there was A LOT on offer. I avoided some of the cheaper toys as these can also be found in my own country (the UK), and I unfortunately also passed on some interesting items purely due to luggage space (one that comes to mind was a beetle model that could transform into a mecha, Transformers style), but I also found some gems that I would have never found out about without seeing them in person.

I will be making separate articles for each series of merchandise that I found, but I'll also put a brief list here:

I also want to highlight here some amazing independent artist merchandise I found at the Minoh Park Insectarium gift shop in Minoh, Osaka. I honestly would have bought more but I visited Minoh fairly early on in my trip and wasn't sure how much money I would have spare. Suffice to say, there were so many unique items!

I've tried to include the artist websites / names for the items I bought, I have no idea if any of these artists ship to countries outside of Japan, but it's worth viewing their items and pieces even just to appreciate the artistry.

I hope you enjoyed this more unusual article, and I hope you look forward to the upcoming articles! And remember, if you find out about an interesting piece of bug merchandise, you can always message me through the Guestbook or through my Neocities Profile. Also, how would you feel about me featuring more independent artists if I come across them? Such as Etsy shops maybe? Let me know!
